Montgomery’s contributions also extend to refereeing sports. For over 40 years, she has officiated baseball, ice hockey, soccer, and basketball games from six different states. She is the first female high school football referee and crew chief in Arizona’s history.

Away from journalism and officiating, Montgomery has spent over 20 years as a teacher, teaching journalism at the high school level and sports reporting at Arizona State University. She graduated from Miami University with a B.S. degree in communications and then went on to earn her master’s in education curriculum and Reading Specialist Credential.

Today, Montgomery is an author of several novels, including A Light in the Desert, which was recognized by Writer’s Digest, Nothing But Echoes, and The Scent of Rain, among others. The plots of her novels span a variety of subjects, from historical crimes to cults and escaping from polygamy.

Being an advocate for youth and foster care, she is a foster parent to four children. In addition to being a writer and speaker, she enjoys rock collecting, scuba diving, watching musicals, and playing guitars.

Montgomery is well known to the audience in the podcasting industry, as she has attended over 50 shows and given talks on the development of journalism, the obstacles in public education, and her experiences as a foster parent.
