EPISODE TITLE: This Professor Spent 30 Years Studying… Vibes?

EPISODE SCORE: Boardroom Vibes

Narrative Overview

Dr. Jason Del Gandio has devoted the last thirty years to studying “vibes,” using his unique philosophies to develop a comprehensive understanding of how vibes operate across multiple dimensions of experience. By defining “vibe” as an active energy exchange, he goes beyond simply using slang to describe the interaction of attributes such as body language and dispositions to connect individuals on a deeper level through multiple indicators that create a unified effect.

The purpose of this episode is to connect the dots between collective vibes and the need for structural social justice on a macroeconomic level. As opposed to responding with surface-level “good vibes only” rhetoric as the norm, Dr. Del Gandio has demonstrated how the energy of collective experience is present among all aspects of public discourse (and support), systemic environments, and grassroots movements—all of which are created by and based upon one energy source.

Finally, he will provide a framework for individuals and organizations interested in how to read, adjust, and apply collective energy using psychological strategies so that they may effectively disrupt oppressive systems, maintain their own personal peace of mind, and engage in sustainable, emotionally supportive advocacy.

Editor’s Note: The Academic Boardroom’s episodic memoranda publish the full scope of our internal preparatory research, core market data, and targeted queries before recording. Some of the questions documented before our recording may have been modified or omitted from our episode.

Possible Questions to Consider for Our Conversation:

  1. What was your life like growing up, and what early experiences led you to pursue higher education and study communications?
  2. How do you explain the connection between a person’s individual energy or presence and the fight for social justice?
  3. What does a social justice movement look and feel like when a community comes together?
  4. How can toxic or oppressive environments use negative energy to drain people and hold them back?
  5. Why is the popular idea of focusing exclusively on positive feelings harmful to real social justice work?
  6. How can activists use their collective energy to shift public conversations and demand change?
  7. What are some simple ways people fighting for a cause can protect themselves from absorbing negative energy?
  8. How does the feel of a physical environment—like a city street or a community center—impact how people feel safe or welcome?
  9. In what ways can understanding interpersonal energy help people from completely different backgrounds build better relationships?
  10. How can leaders use a welcoming, positive presence to inspire everyday people to join a movement?
  11. How do different cultures around the world use unique words or concepts to describe this exchange of energy?
