The Met Cancels Galliano Exhibition: Ethics or Evasion?

On August 5, I brought up the question of whether accountability could be curated. Now, 26 days later, the Metropolitan Museum and John Galliano have announced that the exhibition on this issue will no longer take place.

The exhibition John Galliano: Horizons was supposed to occur on May 2027 and be the centerpiece of the next Met Gala. In the notice of the cancellation, Galliano mentioned the suffering caused by his actions among Jewish and Asian communities and added that “true atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition, or one public gesture.” This expression is significant. The matter was that the question of institutional recognition was at stake. Even though everybody was convinced about Galliano’s success in the fashion industry, the question was what kind of recognition the Met should provide him with.

The Honor Was Part of the Problem

When talking about a single designer’s retrospective being organized by an institute for the first time in history, it places itself in a different league from the earlier exhibitions of the same nature. Galliano could have been in the same ranks as other designers, such as Yves Saint Laurent or Rei Kawakubo. The gala serves as a link between this show and the industry’s most powerful media machinery and financial assets. The Met calls the event the main source of financing the activities of the institute.

When it was first announced, the museum pointed out that the retrospective in question would demonstrate the two sides—accountability and accomplishments. The first part, called Bearings, was designed to demonstrate Galliano’s antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian behavior; his firing from Dior; his conviction in France; his drug abuse treatment; and his further apologies. However, the plan has its intellectual merits and structural limitations. Once the visitors entered the next sections based on Galliano’s artistic vision, creativity, and craft, the message they received regarding accountability may be transformed into admiration. Thus, making any assumptions about the possible message behind the retrospective becomes impossible regardless of what labels claim.

The cancellation of Galliano’s retrospective proves that trying to present everything in context is not always valid when the respectability factor is present.

A Decision Made Under Pressure

The timing of the reversal raises eyebrows. According to the New York Times report, trustees and donors expressed concern, with some supporters vowing to rescind contributions. Political and public backlash had also increased. Meanwhile, the gala was slated for May 3, 2027, which coincides with Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. This potential overlap made an already difficult decision appear careless.

Public pressure does not make the Met’s decision any less justifiable. Museums need to be sensitive to the communities they serve, and these communities have a right to raise questions about the decisions of the institutions. The revised code of ethics of the International Council of Museums states that, as of June 2026, putting the trust of the public and service to society should be at the core of how museums are run.

However, the series of events in this case raises a question about governance. The Met had already consulted Jewish leaders before making the announcement regarding the show. It had come up with a three-part framework for the exhibition and made public statements defending its ability to deal with Galliano’s past. The institution only changed its mind when it became aware of the potential reputational damage that it could suffer because of its decision. A decision can be ethical if it does not have bad effects owing to public pressure. Furthermore, the institutions must explain why their initial assessment was wrong or insufficient in addressing the current challenges.

What Cancellation Avoids

The decision to withdraw the exhibition at the Met creates an obstacle for Galliano’s return to the limelight of the industry, making it impossible for his image to be endorsed with the support of the museum. The Met’s decision recognizes that the communities affected by Galliano’s behavior can decide for themselves when it is appropriate to recognize him as a recovered figure. At the same time, it fixes a mistake made in the exhibition’s programming, which was poorly timed.

Cancellation, however, blocks all other options. The museum could have asked itself what it means to display Galliano without portraying Galliano as the key theme in the exhibition. Letting people know about the industry stakeholders who contributed to promoting his celebrity would have allowed the museum to consider the master’s contribution together with the general contribution of various studios, technicians, and fashion houses. Besides, it could have drawn attention to fashion as an industry that had been working hard for years to reconstruct Galliano’s significance.

Now that the exhibition is canceled, the unanswered questions remain. The museum has taken the controversial title away from Galliano but has not offered any effective answer to the issue of how to deal with controversial people who are still alive and whose contribution cannot be ignored.

Accountability Requires a Framework

The next test involves a process. The Met incident has shown how narrow the line is between historical inquiry and institutional glorification when the involved person is alive and active professionally. Such distinction is even harder to defend when retrospective has the power to boost the subject’s reputation in the eyes of the world and improve his or her financial situation as well. These issues should have been addressed before the exhibition was planned: who is consulted, what is honored, and whether the exhibit format permits a genuine critique without introducing this critique into the narrative of rehabilitation.

On a more immediate level, the Met made the choice of accountability: it rescinded an honor that was impossible to defend. However, cancellation relieved the museum from a more complicated task it originally set for itself—to show that strict and careful curation could survive without producing a service to glamour surrounding Galliano’s name.

The exhibition is over. However, the issue remains. The fashion institutions still make decisions on the canon and decide when rehabilitating becomes recognizing. On August 31, the Met solved one of the questions by means of cancellation. Now, it still needs to explain how accountability should be implemented beforehand.
